Joana Costa graduated in Bioengineering from the University of Porto, Portugal, specializing in Molecular Biotechnology. During this period she was involved in research projects in the fields of Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Tissue Engineering. In 2015 she joined the MICACT network to work at the integration of the EAP technology for tissue engineering applications.

Joana is a PhD student of the University of Pisa and an employee of IVTech, a company focused on the production of systems for the refinement of the in vitro models. She currently works at the research center ‘E. Piaggio’ and at the ‘Istituto di Fisiologia Clinica’ of the ‘Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche’ in Pisa, Italy.

The goal of the PhD is the development of a porous and electrically tunable membrane suitable for cell culture. The membrane, consisting on a DEA, will be further integrated on a bioreactor capable of providing both cell deformation and dynamic conditions for more realistic in vitro studies.
